Everything went smoothly, the staff was friendly, the special meal was correct. It was with Singapore Airlines for the first two legs (Penang to Singapore then Singapore to LAX). The final leg of LAX to BWI was with United.

Medan, Indonesia, is just across the Malacca Strait from Malaysia. Flights to Medan Airport, also known as Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), are quick and easy from both Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Penang International Airport (PEN). Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), Medan, is the third-largest airport in Indonesia serving many parts of North Sumatra. You can get cheap Medan flight deals for direct flights from both Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and Penang International Airport (PEN). From other airports around Malaysia, you will need to stopover in Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

  • How do you get from Medan Airport to the city centre?

You have four options to get to Medan centre from the airport. The most popular is the Airport Railway operated by Railink. This express train takes 35-55min from the airport to the centre (depending on train traffic) and 31min for the reverse route. The station is on Level 1 and you can buy tickets at the counters or online for about RM 30. The bus is good if you’re on a tight budget but it does take 1.5-2h. The bus is called Damri, costs around RM 6, and you can catch it on Level 1 to the right after exiting the gate. If you are two or more people travelling together, it works out cheaper to take a private transfer (cost is RM 43-72) or Grab/Gojek — Indonesia’s version of Über. You can also take a Blue Bird taxi, but note that sometimes heavy traffic can run up the meter.

  • What are some things to do in Medan?

Medan, Indonesia, is the fourth largest city and is known for its food and cultural diversity. It has a strong Tamil influence, flourishing Chinese community, as well as the indigenous Batak people. If you’re a foodie, visit the open-air Merdeka Walk to try delicious dishes from various stalls. Or order the Soto Medan (thickened coconut milk with chicken or prawns, bean sprouts and potato cakes) at Soto Kesawan, an unassuming restaurant across the road from Tjong a Fie Mansion. Once you’ve refuelled, tour this beautifully-preserved home belonging to a wealthy Chinese businessman in the 1900s. Head to Mesjid Raya Al Mashun Mosque to view its striking architecture combining Middle Eastern, Indian, and Spanish styles. If you’re a bit of a royalist, visit Istana Maimum, the royal palace in Medan, where you can take photos in the throne room dressed up in traditional clothes. Our Lady of Good Health Church, or Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni, is a Catholic church with a difference. Built in the Indo-Mughal style, it looks more like a Buddhist temple and is well worth a visit. Lake Toba, a large crater lake in a super-volcano, and Bukit Lawang, the orangutan conservancy, are approximately a 3-4h drive away from Medan.

  • Do I need a passport or visa to fly to Medan?

If you are a Malaysian citizen and visit Indonesia for tourism for a period of 30 days or less, you do not need a visa to enter. Ensure you have a minimum of six months left on your passport and an empty page to allow for the Free Entry Stamp. The cash limit that you can bring into Indonesia is about RM 28,000. If you would like to stay longer than 30 days, there is the option to apply for a visa on arrival and then apply for an extension when you are in Indonesia. The cost of the visa on arrival is roughly RM 143. The cost of the extension is roughly RM 228.
