Lugano overview

Lugano is the largest city in the Ticino region of Switzerland and has a prime location on the shores of Lake Lugano. In addition to its lakeside setting, Lugano is also surrounded by mountains, and home to many parks, making it a scenic spot to spend some time. Lugano’s close proximity to Italy means that visitors get a unique blend of Swiss and Italian when it comes to language, food, and history. The Mediterranean vibe creates a relaxed atmosphere that is hard not to like. Once arriving on your flight to Lugano you will not be short of activities to enjoy as there are many museums and art galleries to browse, an abundance of shopping opportunities, and eye-catching architecture to explore. The historic town centre is a no-traffic zone so it’s ideal for exploring at your own pace, taking time in between sightseeing to stop in quaint cafes and restaurants.

Shopping, eating and museum-hopping aside, Lugano is also a great place to go for anyone who enjoys hiking. The area boasts a hiking network made up of over 430 miles (700 km) of trails suitable for a wide range of skill levels. You can hike for a few hours, or up to multiple days depending on the type of outdoor experience you’re looking for. There is also an extensive network of mountain biking trails in Lugano for those who prefer to see the scenery on two wheels. The lake offers even more chance to take in the picturesque surroundings, either via a boat cruise, or by participating in any number of water-based activities on the lake like rowing or paddle boarding.

Getting around Lugano

Lugano is very walkable, especially if you’re sticking mostly to the town centre. Getting from the Airport to the City

Taxis are always available to take travellers into the city once they have landed on their flight to Lugano Airport (LUG).
