About two million British tourists visit Turkey each year, many of them seeking flights to Marmaris on the Mediterranean coast. Marmaris is one of Turkey’s most Westernised cities – its nightlife is lively, many of the bars and clubs on Bar Street stay open until 4am – but it boasts some traditional Turkish features such as bath houses.
Marmaris is a port city and boasts Turkey’s largest yacht marina. It’s a great base for scuba diving too. Its beach is wide and sandy and a promenade stretches around the bay. Along the walkway are cafes, restaurants and pubs.
Several traditional fishing villages are nearby, their wooden houses notable for their traditional Ottoman construction.
Marmaris is a popular stopping-off point for cruise ships, and from there, regular ferries depart to the Greek island of Rhodes.
